Goldberg Variations - Title Page

Aria from Goldberg Variations - BWV 988
J.S. Bach published the Goldberg Variations in Leipzig in 1741. Bach was in his 50's.
The "Goldberg" Variations are undoubtedly the most important piano cycle of the 18th century. In their outstanding importance, only Beethoven's "Diabelli" variations from the 19th century can be compared to them. Bach's own handwriting has not survived, but the corrected first edition of the "Aria with various changes before the clavicimbal with 2 manuals" is. This rendition is based on this first edition as the main source. In addition, the musical text was compared with other sources, for example with Bach's handwritten entry of the "Aria" (not yet designated as such there) in the music booklet for Anna Magdalena.
